If you are in Milan and you want to taste the local cuisine, Trattoria del Nuovo Macello is right for you. Mentioned by Michelin Guide since 2017, the restaurant in Milan offers the tradition a bit renewed. I had a delicious lunch there and I want to share my impressions. Of course, I am ready to recommend this place. Why? Let me describe better this typical Italian trattoria. I am using the term “typical” because there are many elements that remind old bars and restaurants spread around the country. But there is something more.
First of all, you have to know where it is. Don’t expect a marvelous location in the center of Milan. Trattoria del Nuovo Macello is in Via Cesare Lombroso 20. In the outskirts of the city, on the way to Milan Linate Airport. But it’s easy to get there because underground and buses go to the area. Otherwise use a taxi, believe me, for this restaurant it is worth taking a taxi. Then you can eat great dishes for a cheap price. The feature is to find great food without using all your budget.

When you enter the restaurant you immediately notice the setting. It appears quite simple, as many small bars and “trattorie” were in the villages. There is a big bar counter in the old style. Like, in the same way, are the tables and the furniture. Handouts used in the houses in the first part of the last century. All this is clean, well kept, and proposed with elegance. It creates a bit of vintage atmosphere all around. On the tables, spaced apart, everything is simple. A fabric napkin, a fork, a knife and a glass on a white table cloth.
In the dining room of Trattoria del Nuovo Macello, the atmosphere is not all vintage. Most of the people are there for working lunch. So you can see the typical customers of a big and productive city. Also, the bathroom is so lovely. Some decorations, flowers, and fabric towels are welcoming the guest. The staff takes care of each detail to give a nice experience. Because simplicity doesn’t mean to renounce to elegance and to pay attention to customers. Ok, now it’s time to tell you about the menu.
What do they offer? They bring you the menu plus a paper with the proposal for a working lunch. The menu à la carte has a good variety of appetizers, first courses, main courses, and desserts. Some of them are traditional recipes a bit revisited. Others are part of Lombardy and of the Italian North West cuisine. The working lunch at Trattoria del Nuovo Macello gives you the chance to choose a combination of appetizer and first course or appetizer and second course. The dessert is included together with the first course.
Otherwise, you can choose the tasting menu. This restaurant in Milan proposes a four courses journey into the local flavors. The choice for me wasn’t easy, so I ordered mixing the different offers of Trattoria del Nuovo Macello. I didn’t have any problem to do it. What did I eat?
As an appetizer, I have chosen low-temperature cooked egg on a pepper sauce with Grana Padano flakes and pieces of puff pastry. Then I had veal meatballs, for the main course. I couldn’t finish without dessert. Well, I had a cake pear tart, passion fruit, and chocolate. You can’t imagine how delicious was the cake, but neither how it was its shape. That’s why you can watch the pictures I took. Oh, I forgot: they have a high-level wine list.
The owners are very kind, smiling, and ready to chat if the guest wants. Waiters are very young, most of them foreigners, but all kind. They are good at their job. What surprised me is also the presentation of the plates. The cook and its staff work very well to give a great image to each dish. This is common around Italy, but not all the restaurants do it properly. Trattoria del Nuovo Macello does it.
What about prices? If you choose the working lunch menu you are going to spend 18 euros. The tasting menu costs 36 euro. If you prefer à la carte menu, you won’t spend that much, but according to what you order. A dish can cost between 14 to 25 euro, more or less. The desserts cost 8 euro. The charge also 3 euro as a service fee per person. This is common in Italy. The quality of the food prepared is very good, so, as it happened to me, you will be delighted after a meal in Trattoria del Nuovo Macello.
