Macedonian landscapes

Another post about my recent trip to Macedonia. Some people who wants to visit Balkans are searching for the sea. They are right because there are marvellous places on the coast, but the seaside is not the only amazing part of the area. Between Greece, Bulgaria, Albania, Serbia and Kosovo there is Macedonia, a small country without access to the sea, but with marvellous lakes and breathless landscapes in the nature. Mountains, hills, vineyards and many other beautiful places can be explored by the visitors.

It is at least a good option to alternate excursions with a boat on Mediterranean sea or a day at the beach. In this post I want to mention Delčevo and then let some pictures took around the country, mainly not far from the capital Skopje. Those places contain the real essence of the country, where nature and agricolture are dominant elements. Let’s start our new and small journey into the countryside.

Delčevo is a small but interesting village. It is quite big because it has around 17.500 inhabitants and it is divided in 21 hamlets. The center looks like the one that you can see in all the towns of the Balkans, with some communist and modern buildings, with shops, schools and so on, maybe nothing so particular, but there are some interesting attractions, as archeological sites, museums, churches and monastries.

I don’t want to describe monuments and the heritage, but I prefer to let the space to the rural area. The village is built on a hill and going on the top it is possible to see wooden houses and farms, close to big meadows and fields where the nature coexists with the agriulture, well developed by experts, because Macedonians are among the best farmers. Their methods are not technological advanced and more biological.

Moving from the centre of the village to the suburbs is like to travel into the time and go steps (maybe years) back. For me this is lovely, because the life, compared to Italy, looks like stopped and everything is more on a human scale. That is what I love. There are also a lot of trails around Delčevo. The local mountaineers organization is always available to take people to explore nice places. They do some trips that are open to all.

Join them is useful to not get lost and to enjoy the most interesting parts of the area. Beautiful landscapes and superb views are the ingredients of a day in the mountains. Of course in winter there is generally snow, but in summer there is the perfect environment and weather for the excursions. Macedonia is hot in summer, that is why going to the mountains help to find some fresh air. Oh, if you are lucky like me you can se an ostrich close to a lake. Certainly it is an imported animal. Anyway go around in the country is always easy, each person is safe.

I let space to the pictures.

Art of Romanticism

The magnificent Art of Romanticism. In 1861 Italians united Italy. After some battles. Thanks also to a great engagement of artists. All the kingdoms disappear to let space to a unique country. The process that brought all the country under the same king started in 1815, after the Congress of Vienna. We call this period Risorgimento (Resurgence). It gave the chance to Italy to change its shape. People worked hard to reach the goal and art gave an important contribution to it. Art of Romanticism became the flag of the movement.

The ability of the art to make a revolution impress me a lot. This happens many times, in almost all the eras, especially in the last centuries. Anyway, who loves art has an interest in analyzing the historical context. Not only. Who loves art want to pay attention to the techniques. It’s amazing how artists changed the way to paint in the 19th century. I like a lot of painting and sculptures and going around the Italian museums and exhibitions I saw the evolution of the style. Also the differences among the artworks of the various artists of the same period.

Art of Romanticism: the 19th-century revolution

Romanticism started at the end of the 18th century. When the new generation of artists understood that Neoclassicism wasn’t influencing anymore the society, they started to search for something new. They changed completely the way to express their ideas and point of view. The art of Romanticism has various features. Romanticism canceled the Neoclassical reasoning, control, geometric perfection and, above all, imitation of the art of the ancients.

Not all the artists of the period made a radical change, but most of them yes. They wanted to draw a line to separate the past from the present. Their style was dominated by unbridled passion, strong feelings and a renewed fervor for the religious world. Moreover, if the neoclassical artist was convinced that the perfection of art had been reached by the ancients, the romantic drew, instead, inspiration from the dark and mysterious world of the Middle Ages. That period until then had been considered a period of no importance and purely negative.

Art of Romanticism in Italy

Who loves art can easily understand how nice is a journey into the art of Romanticism. That period is really amazing because it takes people into modern art. The paintings are not only a representation of a view, but there is a sign, something more. I think the feature of the style is visible in the vigorous brushstrokes capable of interpreting reality. Color and not too defined signs tell a story.

This is what I like about the art of Romanticism. Then, of course, there are many elements related to the history of that period. I love to explore the most important event of Italian unity. Also, I like to see in the paintings how Italy was at that time. The same feelings, especially talking about techniques, come from the sculpture. If you want to see art in Italy you have a lot of opportunities. But I recommend you to explore the artworks of the 18th century.

Romance artists

If you like art visit Italy. Art of Romanticism has a huge collection spread in all the country. There are many museums that offer the view of great artworks to the visitors. Time to time in various Italian cities there are thematic exhibitions. I like them because they collect paintings and sculptures also from foreign museums and private collections. So it’s easy to see some artworks that are usually not visible to the public.

I will write more about some art galleries and museums. Because Italy can show you the best examples of the art of Romanticism. But now I want to share some pictures I took during my visits. So I let you enjoy them. Before I remind you that after finding a flight, maybe using some free miles obtained with your credit card, you can reserve a hotel and buy the tickets to enter the museum. Planning in advance will be useful especially if you want to see some temporary exposition because you will check the place and the dates.

A relaxing mountain

I love to have a break going to the mountains. It is great to have a walk-in nature. That’s why I visited a relaxing mountain. It helps to think and to search for some fresh air. Especially when in summer the temperature in the city is very high. I am not a lover of the hot climate. Well, I found a great place in Piedmont, my region, called Oasi Zegna. It is located in the northern part of the region. Nice mountains with a marvelous view and some trails to go around safe and totally in peace. These are the features of this area.

A relaxing mountain called Bielmonte

I needed to have a day off, from time to time. I can be in touch with nature and almost without connections with the rest of the world. The place is a natural park on the Alps, in Biella province. From Turin it is necessary to drive for an hour and a half, more or less, then you enter a paradise. The main mountain is called Bielmonte and it offers a lot of opportunities. Because there are pathways to walk, others where to have fun with the mountain bike or riding a horse. It a relaxing mountain.

There are restaurants, accommodations, spaces for workshops and sports activities. Are included the winter ones, starting from the ski. There are also some sanctuaries. You can enter to see art, pray or just take all the peaceful atmosphere that is always present around the churches over there. It is also possible to visit a few archeological sites. Of course, the park is very big and if you want to see all you need to stay a few days and move for many kilometers. It is a relaxing mountain full of things to do.

If you are going to visit Turin or Piedmont, you can put Bielmonte in your list for the tour. Do you like the mountains? This is the perfect place where to spend a few days. Thanks to the accommodations you can plan excursions and activities, staying a few days. The position is also good because it is closed to other interesting areas. More mountains, nature, and art to visit.

Bielmonte is in Biella province, at the border with Alta Valsessera. In that area live free deers, roes and other beautiful mountain’s animals. Then you can see as well insects, as the rare protected beetle Carabus olympiae. Not always insects are ugly and annoying. The trails for trekking go to pastures where it is possible sometimes to taste local cheese. While you enjoy a relaxing mountain taste good food is a pleasure. Don’t you agree?

A lot of panoramic points are disseminated on the way. From Valsessera the road goes to Valsesia. It is famous because it is close to Monte Rosa and the Unesco sites. They are the Sacred Mountain of Varallo and the Supervolcano, one of the 12 in the world that had an eruption of magnitude 8. I had the trip alone, I planned everything by myself. But the Equipe Arc En Ciel, a local organization, generally helps visitors to go around. Geologists and naturalist guides accompany people to explore the area.

A relaxing mountain that allows you to be alone with nature or to have fun with other people. If you have a passion for nature and geology you will have many interesting aspects to discover and to learn.

The pizza with…view

On the Lake Avigliana you can easily find places where to eat and drink in front of the lake, but the best position is occupied by a pizzeria. To be honest it is not properly the location, because it is perfect, but also other bars and restaurants are in a similar position. What is different is the terrace. They have one that it last over the walk and it is the best to see the water and to enjoy the panorama, also in the evening.

The name of the restaurant is Ristorante Lago Grande – Pub Bel Sugnè. It is infact also a pub. Outside there is a terrace with tables to eat in front of the lake. Inside the setting is very particular because there are different toys inspirated to comics of various dimensions. The smallest are in cabinets like in an exposition, the biggests are in the different rooms as guests.

As I mentioned the position is simply perfect, but also the pizza is very good. Well cooked and proposed in a large variety of versions. I did not try other recipes from the menu, but it is also a restaurant and this means that you can find pasta, fish, meat, desserts and so on. You can also just go there just to drink something during the day or during the evening.

The staff is kind, but when it is crowdy you need to wait a bit, even do the waiters try to do their best to satisfy the customers. The service is good especially for a pizzeria. There are other places around the lake, but this one has really the best terrace and quite chip prices. I went there with a client last Tuesday and I had a really positive feedback.

Hotels or apartments?

Now it is your turn. I need to decide between hotels and apartments. What is the best? For the New Year’s Eve destination I and my friends decided to go to Prague, but we are discussing the accommodation. I suggested to rent an apartment, but one of my friends insisted that hotels are better. He suggests to book a boutique hotel so someone will clean the rooms, we will have the breakfast included and so on. I wanted to go to an apartment to be more independent.

That is why I am trying to get ideas and suggestions from you. We have the task to decide, but you can be a support. What do you think? Are hotels better? Or are the apartments the best solution? Generally, it is a matter of price, but at the last moment you can’t find cheap rates, so the point is more related to the services and the amenities. To let you help me, I can describe what we found on Booking.com.

Hotels or apartments? The apartment

For our New Year’s Eve, I proposed to rent an apartment in Prague. Checking on Booking.com the different available options, I selected the most interesting one. It is larger than what we need, but we love luxury and comfort. What are the features of it? Simply: a marvelous terrace with a great view of the city. Not only, but there are also more things to mention. This is better than hotels for me.

The apartment, called Luxurious Pařížská, is located 400 meters from the Old Town Square. The position is really very good to see the attractions. The terrace then allows having a superb point of view on the Prague center. Free WiFi is included in the rate. There are hitters and a very big space. Five bedrooms, so one more than what we need, a living room, three bathrooms with a bat and a spacious living room. Plus a seating area and a kitchen equipped with a dishwasher.

Hotels or apartments? The hotel

My friend prefers definitely the hotels so this is our selected option. On Booking.com we found a very good one, but what about independence. It is a boutique hotel, called Alchymist Grand Hotel and Spa, and it is located 5 minutes walking distance from Charles Bridge. The place is perfect and it is a very good structure, with even more amenities of other boutique hotels.

What are the features? Free WiFi, reception open for 24 hours and they offer a complimentary welcome drink. Breakfast is included. They have a spa, Ecsotica Spa and Health Club, hosted in 11th-century cellars, you can imagine what a beautiful setting where to relax. The access is free and guests can use the fitness area, sauna, and pool. It looks perfect, but what about the independence?

What do you prefer?

Please help me! I am not asking to support my proposal against the one of my friend, but just to express your thoughts. We have limited time to book and it is necessary to define what we want. I am asking you what would you prefer. Hotels or apartments? What is your choice when you travel? Why? What are the elements that influence your choice? Comment below and you will give me a real help to decide and also to convince myself and my friends. Thank you!
