Hotel’s butler: be a VIP in your room

It is becoming popular among hotel services. But not all the people know exactly what has to do the hotel’s butler. What about this support offered as complimentary service of the best suites? People who approach for the first time to this service they have not a clear idea about what to expect. And they don’t know what to ask the dedicate staff member. Maybe it is useful to clarify some aspects.

The number of structures that propose the hotel’s butler service up to request or complimentary is increasing. Generally, it is paired with special, signature or the biggest suites of the main brands. It happens to the mountains, to the sea and as well in the city. To have a butler means to be helped in managing the room and the stay. Of course, this professional is properly trained to satisfy most of the needs that a guest can have during the stay in the hotel.

It is important to know that hospitality companies offer the hotel’s butler to create a loyalty relationship with the guest. Obviously, the staff has to please the client and not the opposite. So you have to treat them with kindness and they have to reserve you courtesy and professionality. But you as a customer have to use the service and to ask what you need. Just keep in mind the competencies that they have.

The tasks of the hotel’s butler

Each hotel has different rules and this makes some differences in the service provided. Starting from the time: in some cases, the hotel’s butler is available only during the day. In many hotels, it is a 24 hours service. Anyway more or less the do the same things. What is common among the different structures are the unpack and pack, draw a bath and reserve a table to a restaurant.

Usually, the butler has also the task to superintend to the room cleaning. In order to keep always in perfect conditions the suite. So what a guest can ask (you should follow these indications in case you have a hotel’s butler service in your hotel room) concern mainly the management of the room. It is included the organization of an in-suite meal. Sometimes the complimentary service gives the availability of a chef and a dedicated concierge. So the butler can coordinate the contacts between the guests and those staff members.

What the butler does

The first approach of the hotel’s butler with the guests is in the room. She or he welcomes the clients of the suite and show them the different internal ambients and the amenities. This staff member explains as well the facilities of the entire structure. She or he generally tells to the guests what are the task that the butler has to accomplish to serve the customers in the proper way.

In this first meeting what is important for she or he is to understand the people who are in front of her or him. Why? To please them it is necessary to know what they want and need, providing customized service.

After that, the hotel’s butler manages the check-in, unpack the luggage and press clothes. if it is necessary and according to the hotel policy. She or he takes care of the room, meanwhile, in general, the concierge work on external need. For instance the reservation of a restaurant, the ticket purchase for some events and so on.

There is not a precise rule, so hotel by hotel these tasks can be done by the butler as well. For example, the task of the hotel’s butler is also to refill the minibar and the room with drinks and snack. Then this staff member brings the newspaper, the breakfast and a cup of tea in the afternoon or a glass of wine before dinner.

For any need, the guest can call and ask the hotel’s butler that will be discretely positioned close to the room. Or she or he will just be somewhere else with the mobile phone switched on. In order to answer immediately to the call or to the messages got from the guests. For instance, during the late night, you can write an SMS with some changes or orders about breakfast and she or he will provide to organize.

Some hotels are using the new technologies and this means that the hotel’s butler gives to the guests a tablet to manage the room. This is useful as well to interact with the staff. So the client can ask what he needs by the device and the butler will work to satisfy the request. In many hotels in the night, the butler cleans the guests’ shoes for the day after. During the day or the evening, this staff member prepares the bath and aromatherapy, where available.

Details and tip

When you book in some accommodation you can find more details about the hotel’s butler service. In some cases, they send to you a paper to be filled with your needs and interests. So they can personalize the assistance before your arrival. This will help you also to understand better what the butler will do for you during your stay. Then there will be specifics about other staff members dedicated to supporting you.

About the tip, it is totally up to you. It is of course not mandatory and the service received is included in the room rate. But if you think, at the end of your stay, that the hotel’s butler was particularly kind and professional or if she or he helped you also in some tasks not mandatory, well a tip is always welcome by the staff. Petit Palais Hotel de Charme, a luxury stay in Milan

Are you planning a holiday in the fashion city of Milan? I have some advice for you regarding your stay. I have been in a small but charming hotel: Petit Palais Hotel de Charme. Around the center, it’s full of great hotels, quite big and part of famous chains. But if you want to live a unique experience this is perfect. Why? Because as a noble of the beginning of XX century, you can book a room in an old a prestigious building at 1 kilometer from the Duomo.

Its location is perfect for who wants to visit the main attractions. You can easily join the fashion neighborhood or take part in work meetings. Petit Palais Hotel de Charme is a very good example of the elegance and the luxury typical of Milan. You can live an unforgettable experience. The warm hospitality by the staff is not common, but it makes you feel a special guest.

Petit Palais Hotel de Charme: the structure

Entering the hotel guest receive a welcome from art. You can see everywhere antiques, statues, paintings, and furniture from past centuries. The State protects all the building as heritage and that is the peculiarity for each room. It is not possible to find a room similar to another. But each of them has very modern equipment. Petit Palais Hotel de Charme rooms offer Wi-Fi connection, minibar, a safe where to put the laptop. You can find also the machine for tea and coffee.

In the rooms, there are old decor and ancient artworks. But I had another marvelous surprise: breakfast. It is served in a superb dining room. You can find a great variety of food, salted and sweet. Many different types of juices and many delicious dishes. I started the day in a very good way because the waiter came to ask me what I wanted.

A nice ambiance, a great breakfast and, the kind of staff is the best way to start the day at Petit Palais Hotel de Charme. After the meal, you have the energy to go out to explore Milan or to attend your work meetings. Around the hotel, there are shops, restaurant, and bars. So you can enjoy the city and the nightlife as well.

My recommendation

The prestigious style of the rooms and the attention of the staff give the chance to guests to enter in the past world. I had the chance to live the stay in the atmosphere typical of the very important people of Milan. You feel a VIP thanks to the treatment reserved to the guests. If you will book this hotel, you will be certainly satisfied with the service and the environment. And you will go back there during your next trip to the international city, the capital of fashion.

I suggest you book a room on the upper floors. Why? Because if you are not used to the city traffic noise and your room is directly on the street, you will have difficulties. The rooms are isolated, but you can hear the cars and the ambulances. Because there is one of the main ways to a hospital. This is the only tip I want to share because for the rest I found Petit Palais Hotel de Charme very good. You won’t regret your stay.

Boutique hotel: why choose it

Why not a boutique hotel? This is what a friend of mine asked during our plans for New Year’s Eve… I was focusing on apartments and, I admit it, I was insisting a bit on this solution. Why? I want to feel totally free and completely independent. This because we will be on holiday. Anyway, now we have some more doubts and we need to decide between a luxury apartment and a boutique hotel.

I am thinking to share some pics found on Booking.com so maybe you can help us to decide. It becomes like those TV show when you can ask help from the audience. I am not a TV lover, but I think there should be a famous format called “Who wants to be a millionaire?”. I am trying to win my stay for the New Year’s Eve, but I have to decide among the luxury apartment. Before to do that I can explain to you why my friend prefers a boutique hotel. Let’s see together how and why to choose it.

Why choose a boutique hotel

A boutique hotel is an expression of charm and luxury. The structure offers an intimate stay. This is the real difference between the hotel chains and the big resorts. Boutique properties can show a unique style and décor, along with the perks they feel best suit their guests. There is a smaller footprint that helps guests to feel comfortable and in a place more similar to their home.

You can benefit from a tailor-made service, incomparable assistance, like in a family, to a high level of privacy. You have a quiet space to relax. There are more reasons to book a boutique hotel anyway. This starting point, of course, it looks like a great competition with the luxury apartment. Anyway, a hotel gives you more, like someone who cleans the room every day and a ready breakfast every morning.

The reasons to book a boutique hotel

  1. Most of the small boutique hotels are family-owned and run. The family members manage directly the structure and the services.
  2. Many boutique hotels are luxury places with the breakfast included in the rate.
  3. The staff knows the guests by name, so the interaction is more friendly.
  4. Some hotels of this type are located in beautiful quiet places or in the best tourist parts of the cities.
  5. The setting is unique and not like big chains with the structures made using the same standards and design.
  6. There are fewer amenities than bigger hotels, but you can get support to craft your perfect getaway. Maybe the spa is missing, but who are searching for a romantic break, the boutique hotel is simply perfect.
  7. They are not offering loyalty programs and neither co-branded credit cards, but guests will always get special treatment and discounts. Anyway, there are some companies that operate with boutique hotels and they give you a card as a loyalty programme. It is the case of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. In this case, you can get also free nights.

How to book a boutique hotel

Now you know the benefits given by this type of structure, so what you have to check is already listed. In fact, a real boutique hotel has the described features. Plus: they have four or five stars and not many rooms. Checking the pictures you can see the setting. There is always something exclusive and surely you will never feel to be in a déjà vu. Check the availability and the prices on Booking.com. Then I suggest you contact directly the hotel. Maybe they have special rates or they can offer a particular condition. Don’t forget anyway to read the reviews. It can be useful.

And now?

Let’s go back to my challenge. Do I have to book a luxury apartment or a boutique hotel? Well, I really need your help. So stay tuned, because I am preparing a post with more details and you will be able to help me in my decisions. You will be so important because I will get more advice to share with my friends.

Holidays’ tradition: Italian Epifania

You should know the Italian holidays’ tradition if you want to travel to Italy at the very beginning of January. After celebrating Christmas, Saint Stephen (on 26th December) patron of Italy, and New Year’s Eve there is one more important event. Especially for Kids. It is something more curious. For us, the Christmas holidays finish on 6th January, with Befana, an old lady.

Maybe it is not only an Italian holiday’s tradition but here it is like a second Santa Claus for kids. Someone, joking, define Befana as the wife of Santa. Anyway, this imaginary person comes from the folklore. It is a bit sad also because this character represents the last day of festivity.

Holidays’ tradition: the Befana

In origin, Befana was part of the holiday’s tradition in Rome and it became well known by all Italians in the 20th century. We believe that the name of this character is just the translation (mispronunciation) of the Greek word Epifania, that it means appearance.

The Roman holiday’s tradition was concerning a gift exchange made at the beginning of January. It was a festivity in honor of Ianus and Strenia. We call ‘strenna’ a Christmas gift. Anyway, the kids expect some presents.

How Befana looks like in holidays’ tradition?

The holidays’ tradition sees the Befana as an old woman shriveled by the ailments of age and cold, with few teeth. Her face wrinkled and sometimes, but not always, she has a very prominent nose to emphasize her old age and the little beauty due to her age. The old aspect derives from a symbolic representation of the old year. Once it is ended, it can be burned. To burn puppets is a tradition also in the North of Europe.

To shelter adequately, the Befana wears long, lysed and jotted patches. She often wears an apron. She also uses heavy anti-cold socks and comfortable shoes. But she doesn’t use boots much more suited to the witches of fairy tales. On the shoulders, sometimes hunched, she always has a heavy and colored wool shawl and not a fluttering cape. A true Befana uses only a handkerchief of heavy cloth (the pezzóla) or a woolly knit scarecrow knotted under the chin. She has a broom, often used to lean or fly briefly. Sometimes she can also use a stick instead of a broomstick. In the imaginary, the Befana rides the broom.

What does the Befana do?

The character has her own holidays’ tradition style. She has no sack of gifts, but she brings her gifts or her charcoal in jute sacks unmade and siphon. This takes the form of huge socks, or in a wicker basket. It depends on the territoriality and the tradition of the place where it is celebrated.

As the legend of the holidays’ tradition says, the Befana delivers sweets to good children or coal and onion to naughty children. Coal – or even ash – from the ancient ritual symbol of bonfires was initially inserted into socks or shoes along with sweets. This in remembrance of the seasonal renewal, but also of burned puppets. In the Catholic moral view of the following centuries, Befana was putting only the coal and the onions into socks and shoes as punishment. Only children who had behaved badly during the previous year got these gifts.

Will you receive sweets or coal?
