Kruševo: a Macedonian surprise

I had the chance to visit the Republic of North Macedonia and especially Kruševo. Despite the business meeting, I could go a bit around. I want to post more articles because there are different places that I want to tell you about.

One of the villages that left me positively surprised. It is in a perfect location, from where to join a special panorama, but at a first look is just a little ensemble of old houses.

The village of Kruševo

Going around Kruševo it is easy to discover some pearls. Actually, it is well known for different reasons. The first one is because the village, less than 10.000 inhabitants, is the highest in Macedonia: 1250 meters above the sea level, then because it was a political entity proclaimed in 1903 when it became Republic as a consequence of a fight against Ottomans. Its life was short: from 3rd to 13th August 1903. Also, the contemporary national history made it famous: there is a museum dedicated to Todor “Toše” Proeski, a Macedonian singer died in 2007 (26 years old) in a car accident. He was very popular and for him, it was organized a state funeral.

Despite these aspects, I found many interesting attractions to see around Kruševo. First of all the village itself. Walking in the small streets is the first step to get inside the local atmosphere, where the time seems to be stopped. It is a quiet place, where old cars move around together with horses and donkeys. Life is going calm, but there is a space with some computers provided by the government where people can go to use the internet for free. So modernity is approaching the village.

                                                                                         Kruševo surroundings

The artist

There are a few attractions that I want to mention: the museum dedicated to Nikola Martinoski, the sanctuary and the lake. They made me fall in love with Kruševo. The art and nature show somehow the soul of the village and I was happy to go back there to spend a bit more time to explore the area and know better the place.

Nikola Martinoski was a painter lived between 1903 and 1973 and it is considered the founder of contemporary Macedonian art. He also spent two years in Paris where he studied at Académie de la Grande Chaumière. His paintings are wonderful artworks in an expressionistic style. With few lines and a good combination of colors, he was able to show the people and their life.

In each person painted it is possible to see how they feel, their condition. I did not know anything about this artist before but discovering that gallery I had the chance marvelous artworks. I have been twice and the first time I met a lady who speaks French, so it was easy to understand, meanwhile the second time there was a lady who speaks only Macedonian but anyway she wanted to take me in the different rooms and explain me all the paintings.

                                                                                          The gallery in Kruševo

The staff is very kind and in the museum, there are also some rooms to show how was the house in the past when the painter was alive. Some of the artworks are present also in the National Art Gallery in Skopje. But you can check out my other posts about the local attractions. I want to explain a lot about my last visit to the country.

The sanctuary

The sanctuary is between the village and the top of the hill where is a big cross made with iron, as in Skopje. It is a small monastery with a lovely church and spaces where groups can stay to eat and spend some time for their meetings. To manage all the structure there is a man who is the uncle of Todor “Toše” Proeski, or at least is what he says. For sure he is proud to show the room where his nephew was used to spend time when he was a child.

As I mentioned a few lines before in Kruševo there also the museum of the singer, with some of his objects. Then there is also a strange construction where it is located the Museum of National Liberation War with pictures and some objects to remind the victory against the Ottoman Empire. Also if it has lasted for a few days. In the village, there is also the museum of local history where it was rebuilt a bit the setting of the typical houses.

The lake

Now it is time to write about the third reason why I love this Macedonian village: the lake, called Gumenje. In general, it is never too crowded, but it is used for recreation and for fishing. From there it starts the Kruševo-Norovska river, but the main feature is the peace that each person can feel walking there. There is also a pathway with benches built to easily move around all the lake.

The water appears calm, the trees around are well cleaned and gives different colors reflected on the water. Autumn is surely the best season to see it. At the moment spent there I was totally surrounded by nature, almost in communication with it, the sky was closer, blue with some white clouds. A wonderful experience to reconcile with what matters in life.

Where to sleep, drink and eat

Who wants to sleep in Kruševo can book to Hotel Montana, a lovely four stars accommodation on the top of the hill, with wood from one side and the village from the other side. The panorama on the houses is really amazing. They have rooms with a balcony with the view. The structure is quite new, spacious and well equipped. The standards, according to Macedonian average ones, are high.

If you want to stop for a drink I suggest you visit one of the two bars in the main square. One is old and characteristic, with a nice balcony, but be careful because also the balcony is quite old too. The other one is more modern and with tables directly in the square. There are also some restaurants since it is a village for tourism, but I tried one: Kruševska odaja. It offers genuine local food prepared according to traditional recipes. The setting is really lovely with some traditional clothes on the walls.

Eat and sleep in Strasbourg

Now it is time to write about my accomodation in Strasbourg and also to share my experience in some restaurants, the ones I really suggest you to go. As you now I like luxury but especially to have some unique and comfortable experiences. You already know how I check the hotels and as always I chosen the structure considering the location in the city and the services provided.

The hotel

The five star accomodation is located directly on the river in Petite France neighborhood close to the half-timbered houses and to the most characteristic restaurants of the city. It is the best position to start the visit of the city and to enjoy a lovely view of Strasbourg. The Régent Petite France Hotel offer a restaurant with a terrace from where admire a great panorama.

The ideal place to visit the city and the proximity with the shops and the attractions are not the only strenght of the structure. The building was built in XIX century and it was an ice factory, not the shape is the same, but there are modern elements and especially inside the setting is modern style, in the lobby as in the rooms. Elegance is anyway the main feature in every corner.

Inside there is a spa and a fitness center, but I did not have time to use them, I preferred to go around in the city. About the rooms I can underline the big space and a contemporary style of the furniture and of the décor. The bathroom are made with marble and the suite has a balconie from were to enjoy the view of the Petite France buildings. The modern equipment helps the comfort of the stay.

The restaurant of the hotel, Le Pont Tournant, offers the traditional cuisine in a light version, with an innovative touch. To accompain the meal there is the riverside terrace, a nice environment especially for dinner. The menu is seasonal made. The Champagne Bar is always ready to give drinks and some snack as steak tartare or club sandwich. Last but not least it is the breakfast, prepared as a big buffet with cold and hot dishes and a good variety of cheese, cold meat, toast, fruit and sweets recipes.

The restaurants

The first one that I want to mention is called Au Crocodile, the name is quite original, meanwhile the menu starts from the tradition with some innovative creation that offers delicious tastes obtained by selected local and seasonal ingredients. The elegance and the impeccable service are the elements that make the restaurant a must for who wants to have a unique gastronomic experience. In the desserts list there is a space dedicated to the cheeses, with a selection of Alsace and French best products. Oh, I forgot to mention that it has a Michelin star.

A bit hidden from the street, in a Petite France courtyard, the restaurant Perles de Saveurs proposes a setting made by artworks of some loal artists and it has a typical French menu. The tradition let the space to contemporary recipes, always connected to the country cuisine. The fish dishes are superb and in this case I suggest to taste the lemon cake (tarte au citron), in my opinion very delicious. Maybe you can skip the cheese.

A small restaurant managed by a wife and an husband represent a small Alsatian jewel. La Cuiller à Pot offers regional cuisine with traditional dishes prepared at the moment. The quality of the ingredients is very high and there are homemade specialties. Among the special dishes there are the escargots, but since I do not like them I can not express any opinion about them. Anyway the various choice is able to delight every person. If you like cheese, just ask to them and you will taste some of the most delicious products of the Alsace.

Not far from the cathedral there is the restaurant Le Clou, a bistro typical of France with an old but elegant and characteristic decor and furniture. The regional recipes are served with professionality and the ingredients used are coming from a quality selection of the local products. They have of course a good cheese to be tasted after the second course and it is a must since it is one of the strenght of the French cuisine. The staff is very kind and the prices are quite cheap compared to what is offered.

Bars

I can not recommend specific bars, but going around Petite France you can find squares full of places where to drink something in the evening and have fun. The city has a lot of offers for all tastes and you can find also various types of music and entertainment, also because Strasbourg is a tourist destination and headquarter of the European Parliament, so open to people from all around the world with different cultures and age. I suggest you to try to enter in more bars, so you can experiment the different atmospheres.

Safety

There are no specific tips regarding the safety, it is a well protected city, of course it is good to pay attention, but it is full of young people quite open minded but at the same time serious and friendly, as people in general are, because they are used to meet foreigners.

Just an episode that happened to me during one of my visits to Strasbourg. Close to the cathedral a small group of drunk guys were trying to approach people and disturb them. In less than one minut the police, by bike and by walk, came and surrounded the group. They checked those guys and took them away. The police was not standing in the square, but somehow they are always around and ready to act.

Of course it is the main part of the city, the heart of Strasbourg, but in a very discrete way the police is always present, so be careful if you want to be drunk 😀

Fun in Prague

Art, architecture, history. These are the keywords for the capital of the Czech Republic, but you can also have fun in Prague. Culture includes food, drinks, and entertainment. This is part of the city. You can find great places where to eat superb dishes and also where you can enjoy life and meet new people. I am not going to write about clubs, but about some bars and restaurants where you can live a curious experience.

From luxury to the innovation, this is fun in Prague. The city is very elegant so it is common to find places where tradition, luxury, and ambiance offer a time trip. But Prague is also full of young people and of tourists, so bars and restaurant try to offer something new and original. That’s why it is possible to find proposals for each taste. I want to focus, in this post, on a couple of places where you can eat and drink great food.

Fun in Prague: the beer arrives with a train

You already know that the Czech Republic has a long history of breweries. The first one was made in 993 in Břevnov Monastery. One of the oldest in Europe. Today the beer consumption is huge and the country is considered on the top ranking. That means also that the product is good. It is an ingredient of the fun in Prague. There is a place where you can get a glass of it by train. What? Yes, it is the same question I did when a Czech friend of mine said it to me.

Close to Wenceslas Square, there is a restaurant called Vytopna Railway Restaurant. It has a window with a small train visible from the street but when you enter you can see something very innovative. Small railways everywhere on the ground and on the first floor. It is possible to stop for a drink or also taste good food. They have traditional and European cuisine. You have only to seat and order what you want. Drinks arrive on a small train to your table. But be quick, because the stop of the train is not so long and it will start again to bring drinks to other tables. The setting is quite traditional, but nothing special. The simple furniture is anyway not so important, because the train and the good food are the strengths.

Luxury fun in Prague

I already described one, in my opinion, of the best cafe in Prague in a previous post, so now you have another review. Here I write about Cafe Slavia, also known as Kavarna Slavia. It is the most famous cafe in the city. Fun in Prague, at least during the day, includes a stop for a coffee. I like when I go abroad to see people seated in a bar to have a coffee for at least half an hour. Because they drink and chat. Drink coffee in Italy requires less than a minute. People have it standing and without chat. A pity…

They opened it before the turn of the 20th century in the Old Town. Among the guests in the years, they count a lot of artists, writers, and dissidents. For them, it was a hotspot. The most famous client is Vaclav Havel. He was going to have his coffee in this place before to become president of the Czech Republic. But Cafe Slavia has now the same reputation, so it is common to meet a famous Czech person also now. It is close to the main attractions and you can see them from the big windows: National Theater, Charles Bridge, and Castle Hill. Here you can enjoy the daily fun in Prague.

In a luxury setting reminding the opening time but well kept, you can find a great variety (coffees, beers, sandwiches, pastries). You can enter to relax during your trip and enjoy the rhythm of Prague. If you are searching for fun in Prague and you are going to book your stay, plan a visit to this cafe.

Beer is on the way

Beer is almost here
Yes, beer is here
I can have finally my beer
